Demonstrating Trust
Abraham & Sarah
Christianity, as a religion, began with the Abraham. God came to Abraham telling him that if he and his wife went to the promised land, they would have as many descendants as stars in the sky. Abraham, Sarah, their family and following left to the promised land.
The group experienced many trials along their journey. Sarah was STILL having difficulty getting pregnant, so Abraham had a son with their servant Hagar. Abrahams and Hagar's son was named Ishmael.
14 years later, God came to Sarah and told her that she would finally have a son. Abraham and Sarah's son was named Isaac. After Isaac was born, Hagar and Ishmael were sent to the wilderness.
Once again, God tested Abraham. He told him to take Isaac up to the mountains and sacrifice him to show his faith. Abraham did as was asked, but God stopped it RIGHT before he sacrificed Isaac. God was happy that Abraham showed his faith by trusting in him, and provided him with a sacrificial lamb.

Having Faith
Moses & the Exodus
Abraham's descendants, the Hebrews, were forced out of the promised land as a result of famine. They made their way to Egypt, where the Pharaoh enslaved them and put them to work.
The Hebrews numbers increased, which the Pharaoh saw as a threat. He ordered that all the infant children be drowned in the river. Moses was swaddled and placed in a basket, in hope that he would be saved. The Pharaohs sister saw him floating down the river, took him in, and raised him as her own. Over time, Moses learned that he was not an Egyptian. He went walking amongst the slaves and became enraged with how they were being treated. After seeing a soldier being particularly cruel, he attacked and killed the man where he stood. Moses had no choice but to flee. |
During Moses' time away, he became a shepherd. While tending his flock in the mountain, God came to Moses in the form of a burning bush. He told Moses to return to Egypt and help set the Hebrews free. Moses was intimidated at the thought as he was only 1 man, but he returned to Egypt as God had requested.
Pharaoh took a great deal of convincing before he would allow the Hebrews to leave. God sent 10 plagues to the land that resulted in a great deal of strife for the Egyptians. The final plague saw the Angel of Death come to the region and take every first born son. The Hebrews sacrificed a lamb and painted their doorways with the blood as a sign for the Angel to pass their homes over (and thus the origin of Passover). The Pharaohs son was killed during this plague.
Even though Pharaoh let the Hebrews go, he was filled with anger. He decided to chase them down and enslave them once again. The Hebrews were angry and scared, but Moses had faith that God would save them. Through God, Moses was able to part the Red Sea, allowing the Hebrews to pass safely. The Egyptians were swallowed up by the waters, and the Hebrews were officially safe and free from Pharaohs army.
