Critical Challenge: Ski Trip Blunders!
Background: Your class is on a week-long ski trip. You are staying in a big cabin in the woods. The cabin is fairly modern. It has a washer and dryer, and a dishwasher.
Issue: You are on a trip with your classmates and you have only a limited supply of hot water. How would this affect your activities? |
By the 4th day, some of your classmates realize they did not pack enough clothes to wear. Others are complaining that their outerwear (sweaters, scarves, mitts, hats, jackets, etc.) are all wet and are starting to smell. Your supervisors have been using the washing machine, and they have also run the dishwasher twice. There is not enough hot water for all 15 of you to shower and wash clothes. The supervisors estimate that there is enough hot water in the tank to last an hour. The tank will be refilled by morning. However, early tomorrow morning you are going tobogganing and the bus is coming to pick you up at 8:00am. What should you do? What science information will help you reach a decision?
Task: Work in small groups of no more than 4 students. Discuss what you should do. Create a diagram or chart that outlines your plan. What questions do you still need answers for? List any assumptions you make. What the heck does any of this have to do with science? <- Actually answer this question!
